Reading
This week students will read the story, "Watermelon Day." As we read the story, we will identify the setting, characters, and plot.
Keep reading at home! As you listen to your child read at home, be sure to ask them to identify the story elements (characters, setting, plot). Help them notice pictures and text features that will help in their comprehension as well. Finally, ask your child to retell the story, or recall facts that they learned. This will help their language skills and communicate to you whether or not they understand the text.
Please practice the vocabulary words with your child each week. They will need to read the word, match it to the definition, and select a sentence that correctly uses the word in context.

Language
In grammar the students will learn about prefixes. The class will identify words with prefixes in text, and practice using them in their writing.
Please practice the spelling words each night. The first twelve words follow a spelling pattern we practice all week in school, and the last three words are called Word Wall Words. They stay on the wall after the test for the students to use as a resource when they write. They are often more difficult because most of them do not follow the conventional rules of spelling.
